Dortmund Management Urge Caution Over Schlotterbeck’s Title Ambitions
Borussia Dortmund captain Nico Schlotterbeck sparked debate after BVB’s narrow 3–2 win over Heidenheim by voicing confidence in a potential title challenge against Bayern Munich. Speaking to DAZN, the defender stressed that ambition is a core value at Dortmund, insisting the club must always aim for the championship to meet supporters’ expectations.
The victory arrived at a crucial moment for Dortmund. Dropped points from their rivals allowed BVB to reduce an eleven-point deficit to just six. With Bayern scheduled to face third-placed Hoffenheim next weekend, the gap could shrink further ahead of the much-anticipated Klassiker in Dortmund later this month.
According to BILD, Schlotterbeck’s comments caught the attention of the club’s leadership. Sporting director Sebastian Kehl and head coach Niko Kovac were both reportedly surprised by the timing of the statement.
Kovac quickly moved to downplay any talk of a title race, redirecting focus toward maintaining Dortmund’s league position. He questioned whether Schlotterbeck’s words had been quoted verbatim and emphasized that his priority remains keeping distance from the teams chasing behind.
Kehl adopted a similarly cautious stance, suggesting that championship discussions were premature following the performance against Heidenheim. He admitted Dortmund were fortunate to secure all three points and highlighted the need for improved football moving forward.
Schlotterbeck also acknowledged that luck played a part in the result but noted that the reduced gap could start to apply pressure on Bayern. The situation is further complicated by ongoing contract negotiations between the defender and the club.
